Romancing the Stone: Pure 80s Cheese, But I'm Here For It
Okay, so I just finished watching "Romancing the Stone" again, and man, what a wild ride. It's pure 80s adventure cheese, but I ate it all up. Kathleen Turner as Joan Wilder is just fantastic – a romance novelist who gets thrown into her own damn story. Like, talk about a meta commentary before meta was even a thing, right? And Michael Douglas as Jack T. Colton? Smug, resourceful, and totally rocking that questionable adventurer's outfit. That whole scene in the mudslide is hilarious. I mean, ridiculously over-the-top, but I was laughing my ass off. And Danny DeVito as Ralph? He's the perfect slimy, desperate villain you just love to hate. Actually, all the villains are pretty great in their own cartoonish way. The pacing is relentless, too. Never a dull moment as they careen through Columbia on the hunt for treasure and escape those goons. I'm not sure I totally buy all the plot contrivances, but who cares? It's FUN. It definitely hasn't aged perfectly, I'll admit. Some of the effects are...rough, and the cultural depictions are, uh, very 80s. I can absolutely see why somebody would cringe about that now. But if you can forgive those things and just embrace the silliness, it's a total blast. I mean, they followed it with "Jewel of the Nile" but that was awful compared to the first one, I wonder why they couldn't keep the momentum! Seriously, if you haven't seen it, or haven't seen it in a while, give it a watch. Maybe grab a pizza and a six-pack. It's the perfect comfort movie when you just want to shut your brain off and have some fun. What were your guys favorite parts? I gotta say, the dance scene at the end always makes me ridiculously happy. So cheesy, but so satisfying after all the chaos.
