Okay, Conan the Destroyer…Hear Me Out (Seriously)

So, I just re-watched Conan the Destroyer (yes, I know, I have taste), and I've got a theory rattling around in my head that I need to get out. It's about Zula (Grace Jones). Hear me out, because on the surface, she's just the kickass warrior lady, and she is amazing, don't get me wrong. But I think there's a really interesting, subtle arc happening with her that nobody really talks about. Think about it: she starts off as this almost feral warrior woman, right? Fiercely independent, super aggressive. But as the movie progresses, and she spends more time with Conan and Malak, she starts to care. You see little glimpses of it – like when Malak gets hurt, or even the way she looks at Conan sometimes. It's not necessarily romantic, more like she's finding a place, a purpose, and connection she didn't have before. What if Zula wasn't always a stone-cold warrior? What if something happened in her past to make her that way, and Conan and the gang started to heal that? My theory is, the real Dagoth horn wasn't meant to turn a boy into a god, but free Zula from her past and turn this movie into a better thing. The Horn was a plot device, but Zula's character arc was the real treasure. It's not explicitly stated, obviously, because it's Conan the Destroyer! But I think it's there, just under the surface. And Grace Jones plays it so brilliantly with just a flick of the eyes, a barely-there softening of her expression. It's subtle, but it's there. And I might be totally off-base, but I think it adds a whole other layer to a film that's often dismissed as just mindless action. I know the movie got some flak at the time for toning down the violence and adding more humor, but maybe that lightness allowed for these little character moments to shine through. Maybe it didn't work for everyone, and maybe it was a bit campy, but those moments with Zula make it worth a revisit, IMO. What do you guys think? Am I reaching here, or is there something to this?
