Um...Is The Long Good Friday Actually a Rom-Com?? Hear Me Out...
Okay, okay, before you come at me with pitchforks, let me explain! I know The Long Good Friday is like, hardcore gangster stuff. But hear me out! Harold Shand is basically trying to woo the American Mafia into funding his business, right? It's all about impressing them, showing them his sensitive side (lol), and convincing them to invest in his big dreams. Sounds kinda like a rom-com, just replace love with...concrete and violence. Seriously, the whole thing is so over-the-top. Bob Hoskins is amazing, obviously, all simmering rage and perfectly tailored suits. But the dialogue? Some of it's unintentionally hilarious. And the sheer arrogance of Harold, thinking he can just charm his way into a huge deal with a foreign crime syndicate? It's the same level of delusion as someone thinking they can win over their crush with a grand gesture after knowing them for five minutes! And that ending…the car scene? Without spoiling too much, it has the same impact as the big emotional confession right before the credits roll in a rom-com. Except instead of a kiss, it's... well, you know. So, am I totally off my rocker, or is there something almost romantic about Harold's dedication to his vision (and his intense relationship with his city)? Is it just me who saw a bit of Richard Gere from Pretty Woman in Shand or what? What are your thoughts, peeps? Especially those who usually shy away from crime flicks but deep down enjoy a good love story. (Shhh, I won't tell anyone!) Could you see a version with Hugh Grant playing Shand? Just kidding...kinda.
