Conan the Destroyer: Grace Jones totally stole the show, right?
Okay, so I just re-watched Conan the Destroyer (don't judge, it was on!), and while Arnie's doing his Arnie thing, I couldn't take my eyes off Grace Jones as Zula. Seriously, every scene she's in, she RADIATES power. It's not just the fighting – which, let's be honest, is sometimes a bit clunky in this movie – but her sheer presence. The way she moves, that intense stare... pure charisma. I actually believed she could tear someone apart with her bare hands. I felt like she elevated the movie beyond just the simple plot. And I know, I know, it's a summer blockbuster, not exactly high art! But I'm always looking for the performance that sticks with you, and Jones completely nails it. Even compared to Wilt Chamberlain (Bombaata), she just has this natural authority and sense of mystery. What did you guys think of her performance? Was it just me who was blown away, or did she totally outshine everyone else? I mean, she even made the ridiculous 'helmet' costume look kinda cool. I'm also curious about how much input she had into the character. Zula's so much more than just a 'strong female character' trope, and I wonder if that's down to Jones' own interpretation. Maybe the director gave her plenty of freedom, or maybe she just brought something special to the role. I'm going to go see if anyone has details on the behind-the-scenes development. Maybe I should’ve asked this first but did anyone else think the princess was a little annoying? I got why they had to help her, but she wasn’t particularly compelling, and was kind of a plot device to get to the horn.
