Gallipoli: Still Gets Me Every Time :(
Okay, so I just rewatched 'Gallipoli' (1981). Ugh, devastating. I know it's an older film, but it still packs such a punch. For those who don't know, it's about two young Aussie sprinters who join up for WWI and end up in the thick of it at Gallipoli. Directed by… wait, I can't remember the director right now (sorry brain fart!). Anyway, it's not a happy film, obviously. What REALLY kills me is the innocence at the beginning. Archy (Mark Lee) is so pure and driven, and then Frank (Mel Gibson, young and surprisingly good!) is more cynical but still likeable. Seeing them slowly lose that sense of optimism as the war wears them down is just brutal. The scene where Archy keeps running towards...well, you know...with that bugle call still gives me chills, honestly. I think it perfectly captures the futility and sheer waste of life that war is. It's definitely not an easy film to watch, and honestly, it's a bit slow at times. But I think it's important, you know? It's a reminder of the sacrifices made and the devastating impact of war, not just on individuals, but on a whole nation. Plus, it's beautifully shot, even against that backdrop of dirt and despair. Anyone else seen it recently? What are your thoughts? Am I just being overly sentimental tonight?
