Deadly Blessing: Totally Bonkers, but Worth a Watch?
Okay, so I finally got around to watching "Deadly Blessing" (1981), and wow, what a trip. I went in expecting maybe a low-budget horror flick, and I got...well, a low-budget horror flick, but one that's just so bizarre I couldn't look away. It's got Ernest Borgnine as this super intense religious zealot leading the Hittites (not, like, the Hittites, a modern-day cult with the same name apparently LOL). And then there's Martha, Sharon Stone's character, who's just trying to live her life on a farm near them. Add in some visiting friends and some strange deaths, and you've got a recipe for something pretty wild. Honestly, plot-wise, it's all over the place. But I'm always interested in interesting performances and the acting here is...something. Borgnine is fantastic, obviously, totally sells the fanaticism. Maren Jensen as Martha is believably terrified. I'm usually pretty critical of early Sharon Stone, but she definitely holds her own. Thinking about the scene where they are all in the bedroom and the HUGE SPIDER appears...that whole sequence kinda sums up the movie – creepy, a little cheesy, but effective in its own way. I was genuinely unnerved! What I really got into was the film's themes. The movie taps into the fear of the unknown and the anxieties of rural life. The Hittites are portrayed as Other, and the movie uses that to create some genuinely unsettling moments. Plus, it's got that early 80s vibe that I just love. I'll admit it's not a great movie in the traditional sense, but it's definitely a memorable one. The ending? Whew, let's just say you'll be talking about it. So, would I recommend "Deadly Blessing"? If you're a fan of cult movies, 80s horror, or just want to see Ernest Borgnine go full-blown crazy, then yeah, give it a shot. Just don't expect a perfectly polished film but do expect a totally unique experience. Anyone else seen this one? I'm dying to hear other people's thoughts!
