Watching '1984' (1984) - Julia's defiance STILL gives me chills
Okay, so I finally got around to watching the 1984 film adaptation of 'Nineteen Eighty-Four.' Heavy stuff, obviously. I knew the basic plot going in, but seeing it visualized like that... yikes. The oppressive atmosphere is really palpable. It’s disturbing how effectively they create this sense of constant surveillance and fear. I'm not usually super into dystopian stuff, but this really stuck with me. What impressed me most, though, was the performances, particularly Suzanna Hamilton as Julia. I know John Hurt's Winston is the main character, but Julia's quiet rebellion felt more impactful. The scene where she's revealing all her 'under the table' activities, like buying chocolate or sleeping with other party members… it's like a small spark of defiance against this all-consuming machine. That tiny bit of hope clinging on. Definitely made me feel more for Julia than Winston. And that ending? Gut-wrenching. The total breaking down of Winston... I almost wish they had changed it (I know, I know, it's classic) but it was just so bleak. I kept thinking of Julia and those fleeting moments of hope and freedom they shared. It makes me wonder if any of them really manage to win against Big Brother. Anyway, glad I watched it, even if it left me feeling like I needed a serious dose of sunshine and happy puppies afterwards. Has anyone else watched it recently? What did you think of the acting, especially Hamilton's Julia? Was she as good as I thought, or just stood out because of all the gloom and doom surrounding her?
