Okay, I Need To Talk About Splash (and Mermaids Being Metaphors)

Guys, I just rewatched Splash for the millionth time and I always cry at the end, obvi. But this time, something really hit me differently. I know it seems like a silly rom-com, but hear me out: I think the mermaid, Madison, isn't just a mermaid. She's a metaphor for something else entirely! I think she's a representation of the thing you are willing to sacrafice everything for, even your life. Like, think about it. Allen, the Tom Hanks character (swoon), is so stuck in his routine and so afraid of getting hurt again. Then Madison comes along, and she's this completely wild, untamed force. He gives up his job, faces ridicule, and almost gets dissected by scientists just to be with her. That's not just about falling for a pretty face; it's about finding something so valuable that you'd throw away your whole life for it. For Allen, it was love, and being true to himself. And the ending! When he chooses to go with her into the ocean, it's not just a romantic gesture. It's him choosing to embrace that wild, unknown part of himself that he's been suppressing. He's literally diving headfirst into a new life, a new identity. The ocean, in this case, is freedom, isn't it? Ugh, just thinking about it makes me tear up. It's kinda sad, but also hopeful. I know it's just a theory and could be total reaching, but it made me feel some type of way, ya know? What do you guys think? Am i totally off base? What do YOU guys think that Madison represents? Also, does anyone else think that Eugene Levy's character is lowkey the best part of the whole movie? Lmk!
