Okay, Hear Me Out: Is 'Splash' Secretly a Horror Movie?

Alright fellow movie nerds, jessmovienerd here with a WILD take. I just rewatched 'Splash' (yeah, the mermaid rom-com) and I'm convinced it's got some serious horror undertones. I know, I know, Daryl Hannah and Tom Hanks are adorable, but let's break it down. Think about it – Allen Bauer's literally being hunted by Dr. Walter Kornbluth! The dude's obsession with proving mermaids exist is frankly terrifying. He's dissecting fish, harassing random women at the docks, and stalking Allen and Madison like a pre-internet stalker. Remember that scene where he corners Madison in the bathtub and tries to prove she's a mermaid? Ugh, major creepy vibes. And the government agents? They're like something out of a conspiracy thriller more than a lighthearted comedy. They're willing to do ANYTHING to get their hands on Madison. Talk about violating personal autonomy. Who gave them the right to be like that? And let's not forget the inherent fear of the unknown! Madison is a creature from the deep, literally an alien in our world. We don't know her motives completely. Sure, she seems sweet but like, she can control sea creatures. She could weaponize a freakin' whale if she wanted to! Okay, maybe I'm reaching a little, but the potential for underwater doom is definitely there. Plus, the scene where they drain the pool and almost kill Madison? That was genuinely horrifying, even as a kid. It felt like something out of a low-budget slasher, not a Disney movie. I was on the edge of my seat! So, while 'Splash' is definitely cute and charming, I think it's hiding a darker, more suspenseful heart. Maybe it's just me and my horror-tinted glasses, but I'm sticking to this theory! What do you guys think? Am I completely off base, or is there something genuinely unsettling lurking beneath the surface of this '80s classic?
