Just saw Top Secret! ...WTF was that?! (In a good way, maybe?)
Okay, so I just finished watching "Top Secret!" (1984). I went in totally blind, just saw it recommended on a "classic comedies you probably missed" list. And...wow. I'm not even sure how to describe it. Val Kilmer's Nick Rivers is like Elvis but somehow even more ridiculous? And the whole plot about East Germany and rescuing Hillary Flammond? It's like they threw every spy movie trope into a blender and hit puree. Some of the jokes were so dumb they were brilliant. The backwards restaurant scene? I was dying! And the whole 'Swedish book store' bit? C'mon! I did spend the first half hour trying to figure out if I was missing something, or if this was satire, or just... plain weird. But honestly, about halfway throught I was on board. Is it good? I don't know! Is it a riot? I think so. I suspect that if you don't like Airplane! or Naked Gun type of humor, this is not for you. But seriously, how could it get made back then?! It made no sense and that's the whole point. Anyone else seen this? Am I crazy, or is this secretly (no pun intended) a comedic gem? Or am I just easliy amused?! LOL. Tell me what you think!
