"Top Secret!" More Like Top-Tier Comedy?! My Wild Theory
Okay, so I just rewatched "Top Secret!" for like, the millionth time (thanks, late-night cable!) and I've gotta say, this movie is seriously underrated. I know it's silly and over-the-top, but that's kinda why I love it? It's pure escapism. Anyway, I've been thinking, and hear me out on this theory: Is Val Kilmer's Nick Rivers secretly a super-agent, but he doesn't even know it? Think about it! He just happens to be in East Germany at the exact moment this resistance movement is happening, he's unbelievably good at everything he tries (singing, fighting, even milking a cow backwards!), and he's always one step ahead of the bumbling East German police. Remember that scene where he's fighting the guys in the Western wear bar? The dude's a natural! It's like, he just effortlessly falls into all these crazy situations and comes out on top. Maybe he's been brainwashed or something, and the music festival is just a cover so he can activate some kind of sleeper agent mode? I know, I know, it sounds insane. But honestly, the movie is already so bonkers, it kinda fits? Plus, it would explain why everyone is so immediately drawn to him. Hillary Flammond (played perfectly by Lucy Gutteridge, BTW!) falls head over heels almost instantly, and she's supposed to be this highly intelligent resistance leader. Maybe she recognizes something in him, some kind of potential, even if he doesn't see it himself. Anyway, that's my crazy theory. What do you guys think? Am I totally off my rocker, or is there something to it? Maybe I'm just projecting my own desire for Val Kilmer to be a secret agent on him... haha!
