Anyone else think "Nothing Left to Do But Cry" is... Weirdly Underrated?
Okay, so I know this isn't exactly a book adaptation (though I kinda wish it WAS, could you imagine the historical fiction possibilities?), but I gotta ask if anyone else has a soft spot for "Nothing Left to Do But Cry"? I mean, it's peak '80s ridiculousness, the plot's bonkers (two dudes tripping into 1492?!) and the director is... well, unknown according to everything I've found, which is already wild. But something about it just works for me. Especially Roberto Benigni! He's so goofy and charming even when he's being a total klutz trying to, like, not mess up history. I was dying when he and Massimo Troisi tried to teach Leonardo da Vinci how to play poker, lol. Talk about anachronisms! And the whole thing with trying to stop Columbus from discovering America is so over-the-top, it's hilarious. I guess my question is: am I alone in thinking this movie's actually kind of… clever? Like, beneath the slapstick and the time-travel shenanigans, there's a subtle commentary on history and how easily it can be altered? Or am I just reading way too much into a silly Italian comedy? I'm curious to hear what other people think, especially if you've actually seen it! Maybe I'm just blinded by '80s nostalgia. And sidenote: the soundtrack is surprisingly catchy! Anyone know if it's available anywhere? I swear I had it on cassette as a kid but can't find it anywhere now!
