Brian De Palma's Body Double... underrated 80s thriller IMO!
Okay, so I just rewatched Body Double last night, and man, it's still so good! I know De Palma gets a lot of flack for, like, straight-up ripping off Hitchcock (Vertigo vibes are strong), but I honestly think he makes it his own thing. The whole vibe is just so sleazy and 80s, you know? For those who haven't seen it, basically this actor dude (Jake Scully, played by Craig Wasson) is super claustrophobic and loses his girl. Then he gets a sweet house-sitting gig and spies on this lady across the way... and that's when things get cray. Melanie Griffith is iconic as Holly Body! That whole scene with the power drill is just... chef's kiss. Seriously, I was on the edge of my seat! Some of the acting is a little cheesy, ngl (especially the Indian dude playing Dr. Hindu lol), but it's part of the charm, I think. I know some people find it exploitative and problematic, and like, yeah, I get it. But I think it's also kinda self-aware? Plus, the soundtrack is killer. Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax" plays like 50 times, but I'm not complaining! What do you guys think? Overrated, underrated, or just perfectly schlocky 80s fun? Tell me your thoughts. And seriously, did anyone else think that Jake's method acting coach seemed super sketch? I can't be the only one who thought she was up to no good.
