Body Double - More than Meets the Eye (or Telescope?)
Okay, so we watched Body Double last night, and WOW. Brian De Palma, right? I knew it was gonna be...something, lol. First off, Craig Wasson plays Jake Scully, this actor who's like, the most gullible dude ever. Like, losing the acting job AND the girl in the first 10 minutes? Yikes. But seriously, besides being a bit slow, I think there's something deeper going on. All this voyeurism and identity swapping screamed 'commentary' to me. I keep thinking about that telescope scene - the camera angles, the exaggerated red light, the music -- it's all SO over the top, it HAS to be saying something about how we watch movies, and maybe how Hollywood wants us to watch. I think De Palma's making a statement about our voyeuristic tendencies. We're all Jake Scully, peering through the telescope (or the movie screen), getting a kind of sick thrill from watching someone else's life fall apart. And Deborah Shelton's character, Gloria Revelle? Talk about a femme fatale! But is she really evil, or just playing a part in this whole twisted game? I honestly can't decide. It almost feels like everyone in the movie is an actor, playing a role within a role, and we're just watching the whole thing unravel. And am I the only one who read the whole 'fear of heights/heat' thing as a giant metaphor? Like, Jake can't handle the pressure, both literally (the heat in some scenes is oppressive!) and figuratively (the Hollywood pressure cooker). Plus, the whole thing with the drill bit... I mean, come ON. Subtlety who?? I honestly think Body Double would make a great college film class text. Anyway, that's just my two cents. What did everyone else think? Did anyone else find it strangely compelling, even though it's also kind of absurd? I'm still trying to unpack it all. Also, Frankie Goes to Hollywood soundtrack? chef's kiss
