De Palma's "Body Double" - so uncomfortable, yet I can't look away

Ok, so I finally watched "Body Double." And wow, was that... a lot. I'm still processing, honestly. First of all, I know De Palma gets a lot of flack for being derivative (Hitchcock, anyone?) but there's something so extra about how he does it. Like, he's not even trying to hide the influences, he's just amplifying them to 11. Which, in this movie, definitely cranks up the sleaze factor. What I really wanted to talk about, though, is Craig Wasson's performance. Jake Scully is such a beta male, and Wasson just embodies that awkwardness and vulnerability so well. He's genuinely pathetic, and yet you kind of root for him in a weird way. The whole sequence where he's literally screaming because he's stuck in a closet during the robbery is just brilliantly over-the-top. And then Melanie Griffith as Holly Body (great name, by the way) – she's magnetic. She has this incredible control over her own sexuality, which contrasts so sharply with Jake's complete lack of control in pretty much every area of his life. It's an interesting dynamic, even if it's really uncomfortable to watch at times. There's a lot of debate around this film's depiction of women and sexuality, and I totally get why some people are turned off by it. Honestly, I felt squicky at several points. But I also think it's important to acknowledge that De Palma is exploring some complex themes about voyeurism, performance, and the male gaze, even if he does so in a pretty exploitative way. I'm hesitant to say I loved it, because it's definitely not a feel-good movie. But I found it strangely compelling. It's one of those films that sticks with you, even if you're not entirely sure why. I am curious, did anyone else feel that way?
