Okay, "The Killing Fields" - Brutal But Important
So, I just finished watching "The Killing Fields" (1984). I know, I know, I'm super late to the party on this one. But wow, it was intense. I went in knowing it would be heavy, given the subject matter (the Cambodian Civil War and the Khmer Rouge regime), but seeing it all unfold on screen...it's a gut punch. I can't imagine what it must have been like to actually live through that. What really got to me was the relationship between Sydney Schanberg and Dith Pran. That loyalty, that friendship... it's so powerful. The scene where Pran is trying to get his family out...heartbreaking. And John Malkovich as Al Rockoff was fantastic, bringing a bit of cynical humor to an otherwise relentlessly grim situation. Parts were really hard to watch, especially towards the end. Like, I almost had to look away during some of Dith Pran's journey. My husband thinks it's "too depressing", lol. And yeah, it's not a light watch by any means. But I think it's important to see these kinds of films, even if they're difficult. It's a reminder of what people are capable of, both good and evil. It definitely gave me a lot to think about. What did you guys think of it if you've seen it? Did it affect you the same way? Also, trigger warning for violence and disturbing content, obvs! I'm going to go watch a silly rom-com now to balance things out, haha. Maybe "When Harry Met Sally"? Recommendations accepted!
