question

Anyone else secretly love Revenge of the Nerds (even though it's kinda problematic now)?

Okay, okay, hear me out before you come at me with pitchforks. I know, I KNOW. Revenge of the Nerds hasn't exactly aged like a fine wine. Some of the stuff in it is… well, let's just say it wouldn't fly today, and rightfully so. But as a rom-com enthusiast (yes, I'm admitting this), something about it still gets me. Is it the 80s cheese? Is it the fact that Robert Carradine looks like he was genetically engineered to play a lovable loser? I'm not entirely sure. But, like, think about it – the ultimate underdog story! The geeks vs. the jocks is a classic trope for a reason. And Betty Childs going from Alpha Beta sweetheart to giving Gilbert a chance (and then some)?? I'm a sucker for that kind of character development. Okay, maybe the actual 'giving Gilbert a chance' scene isn't the most feminist moment in cinema history, BUT the IDEA behind it is kinda sweet, right? She sees past the horn-rimmed glasses and realizes he's a good dude. And Lamda Lamda Lamda! The whole idea of creating their own space where they're celebrated and accepted - that's a message that still resonates, even if the execution is... questionable. The Darth Vader scene alone almost redeems the whole movie, in my opinion. Almost. Maybe it's just nostalgia goggles, but I gotta admit, I've rewatched this movie more times than I care to admit, and I still chuckle. So, am I totally alone in still finding some enjoyment in 'Revenge of the Nerds'? Or are there other secret admirers out there who are willing to admit it (while also acknowledging its flaws)? Let's discuss! And please, don't cancel me. lol
