Firestarter (1984) - Did Anyone Else Find It Kinda Creepy as a Kid?

Okay, so I just revisited "Firestarter" (the OG one, not the recent remake!), and wow, the nostalgia is strong. I remember being absolutely TERRIFIED of this movie when I was little. Drew Barrymore was phenomenal, but she was also deeply unsettling with those blazing eyes! Anyone else feel that way back in the day? I think it was mostly the thought of a kid having that much power…it was just a little much to wrap my head around. Specifically, the scene when she's locked in the room at The Shop and basically goes supernova? That was nightmare fuel for years! I'm watching it now as a parent and it's obviously different, but the intensity of the situation, the vulnerability of Charlie, mixed with the sheer destructive force... it still packs a punch. I kind of feel like the whole Donald subplot was kind of clunky, even then. Was he really necessary to the story? To me he just felt like a weird addition, like they had to add some super obvious "bad guy". I also think the ending at the farm was brilliant. I'm not sure exactly how that would translate to today's movie-watching sensibilities, but it was pretty cool to see her just let loose and take out all of those people. Do you think it would have been better or worse with modern special effects? Anyway, just curious about everyone else's thoughts and memories of this one. Did it scare you too? Any particular moments that stuck with you?
