The Last Starfighter - legit or cheesy 80s fun?

Okay, so I just watched "The Last Starfighter" and I'm kinda torn. On the one hand, the special effects are SO dated, like, laughably bad in some places. But on the OTHER hand, the story is actually kinda cool? Like, a video game genius gets recruited into space? That's some wish-fulfillment right there! I'm wondering what other people thought, especially about Grig. That alien dude was hilarious! And the whole 'being replaced by a look-alike robot' thing was pretty dark actually. Did anyone else think that was creepier than it needed to be? Also, that Starcar was awesome, even with the blocky graphics! I guess my main question is, does the movie hold up? Is it just nostalgia goggles making me think it's decent, or is there genuinely something good there that makes it more than just another cheesy 80s flick? I'm leaning towards legit fun, but I'm curious to hear other opinions. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a good underdog story, especially one that involves blasting aliens!
