"Bachelor Party" - Guilty Pleasure Throwback? (Parents Beware!)
Okay, so I re-watched "Bachelor Party" (the Tom Hanks one from '84) the other night, and wow, it's a time capsule. Rick (Hanks) is getting married to Debbie… sweet, innocent Debbie… and his friends decide to throw him the ultimate bachelor party. Obviously, chaos ensues. I mean, it's called 'Bachelor Party,' what did I expect, right? Now, I hadn't seen it since I was, like, 16, and watching it as a parent is… different. Let’s be real, there’s a TON of stuff in this movie that’s totally inappropriate for kids. I definitely fast-forwarded (okay, maybe just averted my eyes a little) through some of the more… ahem… adult scenes. The whole donkey-in-the-hotel-room thing? Hilarious back then, now I'm thinking about the poor animal. And yes, it is all incredibly dated, but still funny. But honestly? There are some genuinely funny moments, too. Tom Hanks is amazing, even in these early roles. And the dynamic between Rick and his friends is pretty relatable, even if their methods are, uh, questionable. I kinda felt bad for Debbie's uptight ex-boyfriend and his constant attempts to sabotage the wedding, he was a real piece of work, and made me laugh. So, is "Bachelor Party" a good movie? Probably not, objectively speaking. But is it a nostalgic, guilty-pleasure watch? Absolutely. Just maybe wait until the kids are in bed... or on vacation... or until they are grown up! Seriously though, proceed with caution if you haven't seen it in a while – it's definitely not as innocent as I remembered. Anyone else have thoughts on this one?
