Okay, "Stranger Than Paradise"... What's the Deal?
Alright folks, MikeCinema here, and I just watched "Stranger Than Paradise." I gotta be honest, I'm usually all about the explosions and crazy car chases - you know, the stuff where you can practically FEEL the impact. So, this was...different. I get the whole 'indie' thing, but man, this was SLOW. Like, glaciers moving in slow motion slow. Don't get me wrong, some of the deadpan humor landed, especially with John Lurie's character Willie. But did anyone else feel like the whole point was just...nothing? Like, they go to Cleveland, then Florida, and it's all just kinda pointless. I kept waiting for something, ANYTHING, to happen. No stunts, no fights, just lots of smoking and shuffling around. I guess the 'stranger' part is just how awkward everything is? So, here's my question: am I missing something profound here? Is there some hidden layer of meaning that flew right over my head? I appreciate a good character study, but I need SOMETHING to latch onto. Was the whole point about showing how boring life can be? Seriously, talk to me. Maybe I'm just too used to seeing things blow up to appreciate this kinda thing, but I'm willing to be convinced. Also, no spoilers if there's a sequel or something. I doubt there is. This movie seems determined to avoid any kind of excitement whatsoever. Thanks, all!
