Okay, "Birdy"... More Intense Than I Expected
Alright, so I just finished watching "Birdy" (1984). I went in completely blind, I wasn't even 100% sure what it was about, but I kept hearing it referenced in war films and weird character studies. Man, that movie messed me UP. I was expecting some kind of cheesy, feel-good drama but it's way darker. The movie wasn't about action but more about the psychological trauma, and how war changed these two guys. It's hard to see Cage, who is known for his off-the-wall performances, being so serious. I gotta say, the bits with Birdy actually believing he's a bird were unsettling. Matthew Modine freaking NAILED that part. Just the vacant stare and the way he moved, you could almost believe it. And the war scenes, though there aren't a ton of them, are super effective because you only see parts of it. No big battles, just flashes of the aftermath that stick with you. I think that works better because it shows the impact on the character instead of glorifying war. Honestly, if you're looking for something to watch that is a little out there, and not afraid to dive into some uncomfortable places, give "Birdy" a shot. Just don't expect a classic action movie because you'll be disapointed. Did anyone else see this and have similar thoughts? I'd love to hear your perspective.
