"The Conformist" - Stylish as Hell, But Where Were the Explosions?!

Okay, so I just watched "The Conformist" (1971) and, man, talk about a different kinda flick than I usually go for. I mean, no car chases, no dudes jumping out of planes – but damn, it's visually stunning. Like, every shot is perfectly framed. I gotta say, though, the story itself is pretty heavy. This dude just wants to fit in so bad that he becomes a total fascist... and *that's* how he deals with his past traumas?! Yikes. Jean-Louis Trintignant (Marceau) is fantastic as the main guy, Marcello. He's got this permanently haunted look that just *works*. And Stefania Sandrelli... wow. She plays Anna, the teacher's wife, and she's straight fire. I mean, the tango scene with Dominique Sanda is a bit intense, but I do love the dance sequence. But honestly, while the costumes and atmosphere are all dialled up to 11, I was secretly hoping the assassination would involve, like, a crazy shootout or SOMETHING. I know, I know, that's not the point. Still, a guy can dream, right? The ending is seriously bleak, and it makes you think about the choices we make (and how important it is to not blindly go with the crowd). It's not exactly my kind of movie, but I have respect for how well it's made. Anyone else seen it? What did you think? Was it the best movie ever? Am I just too much of an action guy to properly appreciate it? Let me know!
