Greystoke: When Tarzan Got Classy AF

Okay, so I was just rewatching "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes" from '84, and man, this movie still hits different. Forget the cheesy, vine-swinging Tarzans of my childhood (no offense, Johnny Weissmuller!), this one felt… epic. Christopher Lambert, right? He actually looked like he could've been raised by apes, but still had that noble bearing underneath all that grime. Remember the scene where he first sees civilization again? The culture shock radiating off him was palpable. Apes to Earl, talk about a transition! What really got me was how they handled his return to England. It wasn't just a simple "Tarzan learns to be civilized" story. It was more like, "Can Tarzan ever really be civilized after what he's been through?" The whole romance with Jane Porter (Andie MacDowell, dubbed by Glenn Close!) was bittersweet, you know? Like, he loved her, but he never really fit in. The movie kind of reminded me of "The Elephant Man" in a weird way, that story about finding beauty and humanity in unexpected places. And let's talk about Sir Ralph Richardson! What a legend! His portrayal of the Earl of Greystoke – all that aristocratic charm hiding a deep sadness – was just perfect. Seriously, he steals every scene he's in, even though I think he was really sick during filming, which makes it more poignant, I guess. Overall, "Greystoke" is a pretty solid flick, especially if you're burnt out on the typical superhero stuff these days. It's a Tarzan movie that actually tries to say something, and it does it with respect and style. Plus, the cinematography is gorgeous. Anyone else still have this one on VHS?
