"Totally" Underrated: Let's Talk Night of the Comet!

Okay, so I just re-watched Night of the Comet and like... I’m obsessed all over again. I know it's not a Citizen Kane kinda movie, but seriously, it's SO much fun! I think everyone sleeps on how great Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney are as Regina and Samantha. They're total Valley Girls who suddenly have to fight zombies and super shady scientists? The 80s were wild, I swear. I especially love the scene where Regina is playing the arcade game and suddenly the power goes out and she finds the dust. It's so well done – the way she slowly realizes what's happening, the music, everything. And then Samantha's roller skating scene in the mall... iconic! (and seriously practical, I think I need to learn how to skate!) I also always felt like Kelli Maroney's performance was really overlooked. She brings a lot of physical comedy and likeable weirdness, and it plays so well off of Stewart's more reserved 'hero' persona. But here's my question to you all: do you think the movie is actually a feminist flick? I mean, they're obviously strong female characters who save the day, but is it more than just that? Or are people giving it too much credit? I always thought the whole 'repopulating the earth' subplot with the scientists was kinda icky and undermined the ladies' agency, but maybe I'm missing something! Discuss!
