Moretti's Bianca: Anxiety, Chocolate, and School Daze
Just finished watching Nanni Moretti's "Bianca" (1984), and wow, it's...a lot. I'm on my quest to watch everything Moretti's directed, and this one definitely left an impression, albeit a slightly unsettling one. It's got that trademark Moretti awkwardness cranked up to eleven, maybe even twelve. He's playing Michele Apicella (again!), a substitute math teacher who's basically allergic to happiness and obsessed with finding a partner. The whole 'serial killer offing teachers' subplot felt strangely out of place, almost like a dark satire he wasn't fully committing to. Still, the scenes of Michele wandering around, being socially inept, and spying on everyone? Peak Moretti. I also loved his obsession for chocolate bars and breakfast cereal. What struck me most was the film's anxiety. It's almost tangible, dripping from every scene. Michele's anxiety about relationships, about fitting in, is so relatable, even if his methods are... well, questionable. The final scene where he's recreating the breakfast routines of his colleagues in his own apartment is both hilarious and deeply disturbing. I'm not sure if this is my favorite Moretti film yet. "Caro Diario" is still holding that title, but it's another solid entry in his filmography. I also found the humor a bit more pointed than some of his other work. There are moments, like Michele attempting to psychoanalyze his students, that are genuinely laugh-out-loud funny but also make you cringe. It's a delicate balance that Moretti usually nails, but here, it felt a little…off. Maybe because I was so focused on the fact that this guy might also be a murderer?! Anyway, what do you guys think of it? Am I missing something, or is this one of his more... acquired taste films? Also, side note... did anyone else think that the woman that played Bianca kinda disappeared from acting soon after? Just curious 'cause Moretti usually has stable of actors that appear in multiple movies.
