Threads: Overhyped or Actually Depressing? (My Hot Take)

Okay, so I finally caved and watched Threads. Everyone goes on about how it's the most bleak, realistic depiction of nuclear war ever made. And yeah, it's grim. I'll give it that. But did it really hit me as hard as everyone claims? Honestly, not really. Maybe I'm just desensitized from the constant barrage of terrible news, or maybe it's because I've seen enough post-apocalyptic movies to know the drill: everything's awful, society collapses, and people eat each other, literally or figuratively. What DID bother me was the sheer... clinical detachment. The documentary style, while aiming for realism, felt almost sterile. Like, I get it, showing the bureaucratic failures and societal breakdown is important, but where's the actual heart? When Ruth gives birth to a deformed baby, it's just... there. It felt like a plot device more than a moment of human tragedy. I think maybe the film could have benefited from focusing more on a smaller group of characters, really diving into their experiences beyond just showing them scavenging for food. I mean, the whole Sheffield angle just kinda felt random. And don't even get me started on the ending. Skipping ahead years into the future, showing a world where everyone grunts and lives in caves? Predictable. I'm sure someone's gonna chime in with 'but that's the point! Humanity regresses!' And sure, maybe it is, but narratively it just felt lazy. Like they ran out of ideas and just went with the most obvious, depressing conclusion possible. I guess it gets points for not pulling any punches, but I wasn't exactly moved by it. Look, it's a well-made film, technically. I just think it relies too heavily on the shock value of nuclear devastation without really exploring the human cost in a way that truly resonated with me. So yeah, depressing? Sure. Overrated? Probably. Fight me.
