The Company of Wolves - Still gives me chills!
Okay, international film buffs, especially my fellow fantasy/horror lovers! Has anyone else seen "The Company of Wolves" (1984)? It's been ages since I watched it, but it popped into my head the other day, and I'm still a little unsettled, haha. That movie got under my skin in a way that few others have. I remember being completely mesmerized by the visuals. The fairytale atmosphere is so thick you could cut it with a knife, but it’s also kinda terrifying. All those deep, dark forest scenes... and the transformation sequences? Still impressive even now. Rosaleen (Sarah Patterson) is so young and naive, and then you have Granny spinning those strange, dark tales. The whole movie feels like a fever dream. I think what freaks me out most is how the wolves aren't just monsters, but represent male desire and the dangers of growing up. I'm not sure what director it was but man did they do a good job. What I'm wondering is, how do people interpret the ending? Is it empowering for Rosaleen, or is she ultimately swallowed by the wildness? Also, that incredibly unsettling scene where the transformed werewolf smashes through the wedding, what did you think of it and how did that change the message of the film to you? I'd love to hear other people's takes on it! I think it's time for a rewatch for me. Also, on a side note - are there any other movies which capture the same kind of dark fairytale and unsettling atmosphere? I'm always looking for recommendations.
