"Company of Wolves": FX Makeup Nightmare Fuel or Underappreciated Gem?
Okay, so I just re-watched "The Company of Wolves" after, like, 20 years. Man, that movie is WEIRD. I remembered the transformation scenes being pretty freaky, but damn, they really went for it with the practical effects, huh? That wolf face popping outta Granny's guy, was pure WTF! I'm a practical effects guy myself, so I gotta respect the commitment, even if some of it looks kinda...cheesy now. But here's my question: Was the campiness part of the point? Like, the whole movie feels like a fever dream, right? The stories inside stories, the super obvious symbolism... it all adds up to something pretty unique. I'm not sure if it’s fully successful, but it definitely sticks with you. And Angela Lansbury as Granny? She's always gold, even when she's being creepy AF. I'm mostly interested in what other people think about the creature effects specifically. Did they scare you back in the day? Do they hold up, or are they just funny now? I'm wondering if the director was actually trying to be scary here, or just go for a visually interesting flick. I know some people call it horror, some call it fantasy, some call it artsy fartsy… but what do YOU call it, and why? This movie gives me the heebie-jeebies something fierce, but I keep coming back to it!
