"All of Me" – Seriously, How Did They DO That?! (And Why Am I Crying?)

Okay, so I just finished watching "All of Me" (1984) and I'm a mess, you guys. A HAPPY mess, but still. I went in expecting a silly comedy, and it is funny, don't get me wrong. But Steve Martin? Lily Tomlin? Their performances were just... wow. I forgot how physically gifted Steve Martin was, like, the scene where Edwina is controlling his arm and he's trying to iron his shirt? I was dying from laughter, but also kind of amazed. Like, how did they even film that?! And Lily Tomlin! She managed to make a completely selfish character sympathetic somehow. Like, you wanted her to find peace, even though most of the time she was being a total diva. But here's the thing that REALLY got me. It's not just a wacky body-swap comedy. There's this undercurrent of sadness and longing, especially with Edwina. It's like, she realizes what she's missed out on in life right as she's about to leave it. And Terry, eventually, you see Terry changing and becoming more assertive. It's not just his body being taken over, it is like they both learned something important. The ending, where they're dancing? Man, that got me! I was full-on tearing up. The movie just really hits on this idea of appreciating life and connecting with others. It snuck up on me, I swear! Has anyone else felt this way about it, or is it just me being overly sensitive (which, admittedly, is a strong possibility)? I'm just curious if the emotional impact of this movie lands for other people the way it did for me. I also thought that the acting was great. Also, random thought: Could you imagine this film being made today? I feel like with modern special effects, some of the charm would be lost. The imperfections, I think. This movie may be a total one-of-a-kind for me. Thoughts?
