Stop Making Sense: Is it ALL Byrne's Show...Or?

Okay, so, I've been on a Demme kick lately, trying to dig deeper than just Silence of the Lambs. And I finally got around to Stop Making Sense. I KNOW, I KNOW, I'm late to the party. But I'm glad I watched it with my new director-focused eyes. The thing is... it's attributed to Jonathan Demme, right? But how much of this is really Demme? It feels SO much like a David Byrne vision. Think about the way the concert unfolds. One by one, the band members appear. It's so carefully staged, almost theatrical, and then Byrne's oversized suit comes along. Plus the choreography, the lighting, the concept itself... it's all so deliberately weird and art-school. Demme obviously captured it incredibly well (that tracking shot during "Burning Down the House"!), but it's hard for me to shake the feeling that Byrne was the true auteur here. Maybe I'm totally off base, but it feels like Demme's role was more of a facilitator, documenting Byrne's grand artistic statement. He enabled the vision, for sure. The editing keeps the energy HIGH and the performance choices come through so clearly. But maybe Demme saw the genius in Byrne's concept and wisely chose to just... let it happen? I'm wondering if other people have felt this way or if I'm being totally unfair to Demme's contributions (or overrating Byrne's?). Of course, it could be that that's the point. That it's a true collaboration, with Demme perfectly understanding and translating Byrne's vision. But honestly, it could just be the lighting is so great and Byrne is so captivating I'm just ready to give him ALL the credit! Thoughts?
