Godzilla's Back...But What's With the Suits?
Okay, so I finally got around to watching "The Return of Godzilla" (1984). I know, I know, late to the party. But like, wow, that's one grumpy lizard! The special effects were...certainly something, haha. But, being me, I was super distracted by the clothes. Like, everyone's in these very practical, almost drab outfits. Lots of greys and blues, very serious business attire. Even the scientists! It feels like the costuming really reinforces the government suppression angle, right? I'm especially curious about the outfits after Godzilla attacks Tokyo. Obviously, there's chaos, but what were they THINKING with the emergency services uniforms? So bland. It feels so different than newer disaster movies where everyone is in these bright, reflective, hi-vis materials. Then again, I guess it fits the somewhat retro vibe of the whole movie. Did anyone else notice this, or am I just being extra? I'm wondering if the color palette throughout the entire film was intentional to reflect the seriousness of the government's reaction, or if it was just a stylistic choice for the time. What are your thoughts on the clothing choices? Especially compared to other Godzilla films, were they trying to make a statement?
