Sexmission: Polish 80s Weirdness...Did I Just Imagine That?
Okay, so I just finished watching Sexmission (1984). Holy moly, where do I even begin? Two dudes, Max and Albert, volunteer for hibernation, right? Supposed to wake up in three years. But NOPE! World War III happens, and they wake up like 50 years later in a completely underground society run by women who think men are these barbaric, extinct creatures. The premise alone is bonkers. Like a fever dream I had after eating too much kielbasa. Seriously, the whole aesthetic is something else. Think early Terry Gilliam but with decidedly cheaper special effects and a whole lot of shoulder pads. The production design is kinda amazing in its own way, though. It's so obviously dated, but that adds to the charm, I guess? There was this one scene where they go to 're-education' or something and the way the women are dressed and the weird machinery, ah man i was dying. The acting is... well, let's just say it's "committed" to the bit. But here's my question: Did anyone else find the philosophical stuff kinda... profound? I mean, it's buried under layers of camp and sci-fi silliness, but there's this undercurrent of questioning gender roles and societal norms that's surprisingly relevant, even today. Or am I just overthinking this because it's 3 AM and I'm running on fumes? I also need to know if anyone understands what the deal was with the sperm bank heist plan. That seemed kinda tacked on lol Anyway, if you're looking for something truly bizarre and unforgettable, Sexmission might just be your cup of tea. Just be prepared for some serious 80s-ness. And someone make some sense of that ending, PLEASE.
