Adela Quested, what WERE you THINKING?! (A Passage to India Thoughts)

Okay, so I finally got around to watching A Passage to India (the 1984 one, obvs). And, wow, talk about a movie where everyone's just completely misreading everyone else! From start to finish, it's a masterclass in cultural cluelessness and how easily things can spiral out of control. Legit, there's a line from The Usual Suspects that perfectly sums it up: 'The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.' Here, it's like the British are so convinced they're doing good, they can't even SEE the damage they're causing. Judy Davis as Adela... ugh. You just wanted to shake her the whole time. I get she's trying to be open-minded, but then BAM! Cave incident. The whole thing just feels so… ambiguous? Like, did something actually happen? Did she just freak out? The movie doesn't give you an easy answer. And then Victor Banerjee as Dr. Aziz…heartbreaking. He's just trying to be friendly, show these people his country, and he gets completely railroaded. Makes you think about that line from Hamlet: 'Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.' Only this time, it's colonial India. That court scene, though. WOW. Talk about tension. I was on the edge of my seat. And Dame Peggy Ashcroft as Mrs. Moore? Honestly, she's the only one with any sense. That moment when she just...breaks down and can't support the prosecution? Chills. Reminded me of The Lion King in a weird way, when Mufasa tells Simba, 'Everything you see exists together in a delicate balance.' The Brit presence in India was NOT a delicate balance, that is fersure, lol. Overall, it's a heavy watch, and it's defo not a feel-good movie. But it's thought-provoking, and the acting is top-notch. It really made me consider the complexities of colonialism and how easily misunderstandings can lead to injustice. I'm still turning the whole thing over in my head. Anyone else seen this? What did you guys think of Adela's accusation? Was it a straight up 'I've made a huge mistake' moment, like in Arrested Development, or something darker?
