Runaway (1984): Cheesy 80s robot fun or actually kinda scary?
Okay, so I randomly stumbled on "Runaway" from 1984 with Tom Selleck and I gotta say, it's... something, lol. The whole idea of robots going haywire and needing a special police force to deal with it is kinda funny now, but I can see how it might've seemed more futuristic than it does today. It's def got that 80s vibe going on hard, with the music and the outfits... and those robots! What I'm wondering is, did anyone else find the robots actually a little creepy? Especially that spider one! I mean, the way it scuttles around... gives me the shivers! And the whole plot about someone programming them to kill is pretty dark. It definitely clashes with the whole 'light and cheesy' tone somehow. Selleck as the cop is... well, Selleck. He does a good job being the serious dude, but it's hard to take the whole movie TOO seriously, you know? I just wanna know if I'm the only one who thought the killer robot concept was a little more disturbing than the rest of the movie let on. Or am I just used to ultra realistic CGI now and the slightly janky looking robots were still scary back in the day? What are your thoughts?
