Runaway (1984): Criminally Underrated Score!
Okay, hughesreviews here with another deep dive into a score that deserves way more love: "Runaway" (1984). Yes, the movie itself...well, it's got Tom Selleck fighting killer robots. Need I say more? The direction felt a little flat, honestly. Like, the premise is solid, but the execution is kinda cheesy even for the 80s. But! The Jerry Goldsmith score? Absolute FIRE. Seriously, it's a synth-driven masterpiece (okay, maybe I went overboard there, but it's SO GOOD) that perfectly captures the futuristic, slightly gritty, feel of the movie. The main theme is classic Goldsmith, with this really cool blend of suspense and action. The use of electronics is just phenomenal for the time, giving it that cyberpunk edge. I particularly love the music cues during the spider-bot scenes – genuinely creepy and unsettling. There's a track where Selleck is investigating the robots and the score builds this incredible sense of dread and tension. I honestly think the score elevates the entire movie. Without it, "Runaway" would be a forgettable 80s sci-fi flick. With it, it's a guilty pleasure with a killer soundtrack. Seriously, if you haven't heard it, go check it out (it's on Spotify). Let me know what you think! I'm always up for talking Goldsmith. Anyone else think Kirstie Alley was totally wasted in this movie? I mean, she's great, but her character felt so...underdeveloped. Anyway, back to the MUSIC! Seriously, guys, Jerry Goldsmith. Legend.
