Carmen Maura in 'What Have I Done to Deserve This?!' - Underrated queen!

Okay, folks, just finished watching 'What Have I Done to Deserve This?!' and I'm still processing. I knew Almodóvar was wild, but wow. Seriously, Carmen Maura is just EVERYTHING in this. What a performance! Glória is struggling, okay? But Maura manages to make her both a victim and kind of complicit in her own misery. It's amazing. I'm especially thinking about the scene where she's trying to sell that vacuum cleaner. The desperation in her eyes, the pathetic little spiel… it's heartbreaking and hilarious all at once. And then, the way she just snaps later on? Totally understandable, even if the method is…extreme. But did anyone else feel like there was a bit of dark humor in how over-the-top the situations were? Or am I just a terrible person for laughing? Honestly, I'm kinda obsessed with Maura's range here. She handles the comedic beats perfectly, but she also nails the underlying sadness and frustration. Like, I was genuinely rooting for her, even when she was making questionable decisions. I keep seeing people talk about Penélope Cruz and her work with Almodóvar (deservedly so!), but I feel like Maura’s contributions are often overlooked. So, my question is: what's your favorite Carmen Maura performance? And do you think she gets the recognition she deserves for her early work with Almodóvar? Let's discuss!
