Ok, "Ronia: The Robber's Daughter" - Wholesome Horror?

So, I finally got around to watching "Ronia: The Robber's Daughter" (the 1984 version), and I'm still trying to figure out how to categorize it. On one hand, it's this adorable coming-of-age story about a girl growing up in a robber's fort. On the other, it has legit creepy moments! I mean, those Witchbirds? Nightmares fuel, seriously. And the Rump-Gnomes are just... unsettling. Like warped, slightly disturbing puppets. I'm not sure who directed this, but they had some interesting ideas about what scared kids! The dynamic between Ronia and Birk is so sweet, though. They're basically Romeo and Juliet but with less death and more…forest creatures. Loved the scene where they're navigating the mist, it was so atmospheric and suspenseful! And the constant threat of rival robber gangs adds a layer of tension that keeps you engaged. It definitely has that "fantasy film from the 80s" vibe, you know? Slightly cheesy special effects, but so much heart. It's not gonna give you the jump scares of something like "Sinister", but it's got this gentle horror that lingers. It kinda reminds me of a darker, more grounded version of "The NeverEnding Story". Overall, I'd recommend "Ronia" if you're looking for something a little different. It's not straight-up horror, but it's got enough spooky elements to keep things interesting, especially if you appreciate that vintage fantasy aesthetic. Plus, it's a feel-good movie at the core, it's all about friendship and acceptance. Let me know what you thought if you've seen it!
