Ronia the Robber's Daughter: Nostalgia Bomb or Actually Good?
Okay, so I just rewatched "Ronia the Robber's Daughter" (the 1984 version, obviously) and man, the wave of nostalgia hit HARD. I remember being OBSESSED with this movie as a kid. The music alone is instantly recognizable. The forest scenes, even though they're clearly shot on a soundstage, still hold this weird, almost fairytale-like charm. I always loved how raw and adventurous Ronia felt, a real contrast to the 'perfect princess' types that are all over. I didn't know it was a Swedish movie until recently! Now, rewatching it as an adult, the pacing is…certainly interesting. It meanders in places, and some of the creature effects are definitely dated (those Stumpies, LOL). But honestly, I think that adds to its charm? It's not trying to be slick or hyper-realistic. It’s got this genuine, almost innocent quality that's really refreshing. Also, that scene where Ronia and Birk jump over that ravine is iconic. I swear I tried to recreate that with my friends so many times as a kid, always ended up with a twisted ankle lol. The best part is the relationship between ronia and birk. It's a sweet story about rivals making peace. It's interesting to see how parents are portrayed as flawed when the kids are so confident. Overall, I think it holds up surprisingly well, not as a cinematic tour de force, but as a really sweet and imaginative children's adventure. Maybe it's just the nostalgia talking, but I still think it's worth a watch, especially if you're looking for something different from the usual Hollywood fare - or just want to relive your childhood for a bit. What did you guys think if you've seen it?
