"Blame It on Rio": Okay, the Ethics are...Yikes. But the Music?
So, I recently revisited "Blame It on Rio" (yes, that movie) and, wow, okay, the plot is... definitely problematic by today's standards. I'm not going to dive into the whole can of worms of a middle-aged Matthew Broderick-esque guy (Michael Caine) falling for his best friend's teenage daughter (Demi Moore). Let's just say it hasn't aged well in that department. Seriously, if you haven't seen it, be prepared for some serious cringes. BUT! And there's a big but (no pun intended considering the movie, forgive me), I’m actually here to talk about the soundtrack. The score by Ken Wannberg (with additional music supervision by Phil Ramone) is genuinely delightful. It's full of that awesome early 80s Hollywood sound, light and breezy, perfect for a vacation rom-com...if you ignore the whole, uh, everything else. There are some really catchy tunes that instantly transport you to a sun-drenched Rio. I'm particularly fond of the more upbeat cue that plays during the montage scenes; it's just pure escapism. Think lots of layered synth and breezy guitar parts that evoke the feeling of a carefree vacation. I'm trying really hard to separate the music here from the, shall we say, questionable narrative. Wannberg does a great job underscoring the humor and the (supposed) charm of the situation, even if the situation itself is…well, you know. It's a bittersweet kind of appreciation, acknowledging the score's effectiveness while flinching at the movie's premise. Do I recommend the movie? Ehhhh...proceed with caution. DO I recommend checking out the soundtrack if you're into 80s scores? Absolutely. You might even recognize the music; it has that distinct 80's feel. You can find some clips online, but sadly, it doesn't look like the soundtrack was ever officially released. That's a darn shame! Anyone else find themselves torn between enjoying the score and being squicked out by the movie? Let me know your thoughts! Maybe I'm just a lost cause when it comes to good film scores, haha.
