"Electric Dreams" - Tech Geek's Paradise or Just Plain Cheesy?
Okay, so I just rewatched "Electric Dreams" (1984) and I'm torn. On one hand, the synthwave soundtrack is seriously killer – Giorgio Moroder at his finest, right? Totally sets the mood. And Edgar, the computer, is kinda charming even though his love triangle with Miles and Madeline is totally awkward. But... some of the effects are SO dated. Like, painfully 80s. The animation sequences where Edgar is "thinking" are super corny now. But here's what I'm wondering: did anyone else notice how they actually used a lot of practical effects for Edgar's interaction with the house? Like the way he controls the appliances and stuff. It's not all CGI, which I kinda appreciate. I'm also curious about the sound design – especially when Edgar is going haywire. There's this crazy mix of blips and bloops and almost... musical tones? I'm guessing it was all analog synths and clever manipulation but I'd love to know if anyone knows more about the specific equipment they used. Also, that climax when Edgar sings (okay, more like synthesizes) a song? Cringe-worthy but also strangely endearing. Was that really Lenny Von Dohlen's (Miles) singing voice altered, or did they use a voice actor? The credits are kinda vague. Overall, is it a good movie? I don't know! It's definitely a product of its time, but it's got a certain something that keeps me coming back. What do you guys think? Am I just blinded by nostalgia, or is there genuinely something of value in this weird little movie? Lastly, is it just me or does Edgar predict HAL9000 as having actual, real emotions? Discuss!
