Breakin': Electic Boogaloo WITH Fashion?
Okay, so I just watched Breakin' for the first time (yeah, I know, I'm late to the party). The dancing is INSANE, obviously. But I'm SophiaOnFilm, so my eyes were glued to the CLOTHES. Turbo's whole look is like... a beautiful trainwreck, lol. That asymmetrical jacket, the random bits of fabric safety-pinned everywhere... it's a lot, but it's undeniably got a vibe. Ozone's got that cool, minimalist thing going on, and Kelly is just straight-up iconic with her legwarmers and off-the-shoulder everything. But the whole movie is just pure 80s excess, and I love it. The street scenes are basically a fashion show. The colors! The patterns! It's almost too much to take in all at once. I was wondering, does anyone know anything about where they got the inspiration for these costumes? I'm especially curious if some of those early streetwear designers were involved, or if it was all just pure street style inspiration. I'm thinking like, maybe they just let the dancers wear their own stuff? Or did they have a costume designer who was really tapping into the breakdancing scene? I mean, some of it looks deliberately 'put together' and some of it feels super authentic. It's kind of fascinating. Especially when you compare it to studio films like Flashdance, which also has a very distinct 80s look, but in a different way. Wondering what other people's thoughts are... Anyone know anything about the Breakin' costuming?
