"The Lonely Guy": Diane Keaton's Wardrobe is Everything! (And Steve Martin's Glasses...)
Okay, so I just watched "The Lonely Guy" (1984) and I know the whole point is supposed to be, like, Steve Martin being a lovelorn loser or whatever. But honestly? I was completely distracted by the fashion. Diane Keaton is... well, she's Diane Keaton, so you KNOW she's serving looks. Seriously, that oversized blazer and turtleneck combo when she's playing cello? I need that outfit immediately. And the big, drapey coats! I'm obsessed. I need to figure out who the costume designer was, asap. Beyond Keaton though, Steve Martin's whole 'lonely guy' aesthetic is actually kinda funny because it's so... specific. The big glasses, the slightly-too-short ties, the patterned sweaters. It's like he's trying to dress the part, almost like he's cosplaying as a sad writer. Which, I guess, he kinda is, lol. It makes the whole thing a bit more absurd, which I think is the point of the movie anyway. I also noticed some really 80's trends. Like, the extras had some serious shoulder pads going on. And the bright colors! It's fun to see how fashion was at the time. I'm not sure I'd call the movie amazing, but I enjoyed it! And I'd definitley rewatch it just for the fashion inspo. Anyone else notice the clothes, or am I too focused on that kinda thing? Haha!
