The Breakfast Club: Were They Really Friends on Monday?
Okay, so I've been thinking about The Breakfast Club again. I know, I know, 'Don't you forget about me...' yeah, yeah, the song's iconic, the movie's...well, it's something. But seriously, do we actually believe they all stayed besties after that Saturday? I kinda buy Bender and Claire happening, because opposites attract, right? And 'Sweets, you couldn't ignore me if you tried' - that whole scene in the closet definitely had sparks flying. But everyone else? Nah. Here's my theory: they went back to their own cliques on Monday morning. Andrew probably bragged a bit about making out with Ally Sheedy's character (Allison? I always forget), and then tried to act cool around his wrestling buddies. Claire told her friends everything, embellished it a bit, and instantly regretted kissing Bender. Brian, bless his heart, went back to being invisible. And Allison? Maybe, maybe she kept a tiny, secret connection with Andrew, but I doubt it lasted. The whole 'we're all the same' thing felt more like something they needed to tell themselves to get through the day. I will grant you this: they definitely saw each other differently afterward. Like, they knew those other people existed and had lives beyond those cliques! But actual, sustained friendship? I'm not buying it. They had one shared traumatic experience fueled by detention and peer pressure but is that the basis for true relationships? And let's be real, Principal Vernon was a real piece a work, 'Aaaahhh, kids these days!' amiright? So maybe they're friends in the sense that they all survived Vernon's wrath, lol! What do you guys think? Am I being too cynical? I just can't see it lasting. Maybe they run into each other at their 10-year reunion and have a good laugh about it, but that's about it. It was just a Saturday detention, a one-off, 'And these children that you spit on as they try to change their worlds/ are immune to your consultations. They're quite aware of what they're going through...'
