Okay, "Brazil"... WTF did I just watch?!
Alright everyone, I finally tackled "Brazil" (1985). I'd heard it was some kind of weird cult classic, and yeah, I can see why. Honestly, I'm still processing it. I watched it blind, no idea who directed it (some guy named Gilliam?), and the plot summary I read just said it was about a bureaucrat with crazy dreams. That's... underselling it, to say the least. This movie is bonkers. So, Sam (played by Jonathan Pryce) is this totally unremarkable dude who gets caught up in a bureaucratic error that basically ruins this poor guy Buttle's life. But the thing that REALLY got me was the whole dream sequence parts. Like, all the gears and pipes and the winged samurai stuff? My brain definitely went "huh?" multiple times. Although, I kinda get the appeal of escaping into fantasy when your real life is that drab. I loved how Terry Gilliam just went completely off the rails with the weirdness. It felt like someone took Kafka and Monty Python and shook them up in a blender. I'm not sure I fully understand it, if I'm being honest. There are so many layers of commentary about bureaucracy and technology and... I don't even know! But I was definitely entertained. I keep thinking about the scene where De Niro's character Tuttle is rappelling down the side of buildings fixing ductwork – pure genius. It's unsettling, funny, and thought-provoking all at the same time. The ending though? Man, that ending REALLY messed with me. Is he actually free? Is he completely lost in his own head? I literally sat there staring at the credits roll feeling like I needed a drink. I'm gonna need to rewatch it, probably multiple times. Definitely not an easy watch, but it's one that sticks with you. Anyone else seen this one? What did you think? Am I completely missing something obvious? Help me out here, people! lol
