Okay, "Brazil" is STILL Blowing My Mind (Even on Repeat #7!)
Alright film fanatics, Hannahfilmbuff back at it again. Just finished watching "Brazil" for like, the seventh time (I think? Lost count). And honestly, this Terry Gilliam flick just keeps getting better (or maybe more terrifying?) with age. You pick up on new stuff every single time. This time, I was super focused on the Christmas decorations. So darkly satirical! Like, the cheerfulness is just forced against the backdrop of the totalitarian bureaucracy. And the duck! The Christmas duck that gets replaced with that... thing... at Sam's mom's party? That whole scene is pure genius. Also, I noticed how often information is just wrong. Tuttle's name, Buttle's file... it all speaks to the system's total incompetence even while it's being so oppressively controlling. It is funny--darkly--but it hits different now. I still get a bit lost in the Terry Gilliam madness sometimes (maybe I need a flowchart?). But I think that's kind of the point, right? It's meant to be overwhelming and confusing, just like Sam's life. My only real complaint is the ending. I'm still not sure if it's brilliant or just frustrating! I mean, does he ACTUALLY escape? Or is it all just a lobotomized fantasy? Someone please explain! Anyway, if you haven't seen it, or you've only seen it once, give it another go. You won't regret it (maybe... haha!). Oh, and one last thing: anyone else find it weirdly prescient? All this dependence on technology, the surveillance state... kinda hits close to home, doesn't it? shivers
