Okay, "Brazil"? More Like Bizarre-il!

So, I finally watched "Brazil" (1985) last night after seeing it randomly recommended a bunch. Okay, wow. That was...a lot. I kept thinking, "Is this Terry Gilliam?" and then I looked it up and surprise! It was. Explains a lot, actually. I was expecting something kinda dry and dystopian, but it was just straight-up bonkers. I mean, ducks-under-glass-tables bonkers. Robert De Niro as a rogue HVAC repairman? Jonathan Pryce lost in paperwork and ductwork? It's not exactly a family film, folks, unless your family enjoys heavy doses of dark humor and slightly terrifying imagery. I think what got me most was the style. The sets were so incredibly cluttered and claustrophobic. Every scene felt like it was about to collapse. And the little details! The weird babies on screens, the rubber masks, Michael Palin's character being SO cheerfully evil... it's definitely stuck in my head. The whole Sam Lowry character, escaping into his daydreams to be some winged hero, that was interesting, even if I didn't totally get it. Is it a commentary on escapism? Maybe? Or is it just a really bizarre fever dream someone managed to film? I'm not sure if I liked it, liked it. But I definitely can't say I was bored. It's one of those movies that you kinda need to process after, you know? Like, I'm going to be thinking about that torture scene (shudder) for a while. And the insane amount of paper! Makes you appreciate cloud storage, doesn't it? Ha! Anyway, has anyone else seen it? What did you think? Am I totally missing something here, or is it just supposed to be this weird and unsettling? Also, a quick warning for any parents thinking of watching it – there's some questionable stuff in there, violence and some suggestive scenes. Definitely not for younger kids. Maybe older teens who are into weird art-house films. Just saying!
