Okay, "Return" (1985) - Anyone else think...?
Okay, international film buffs, diving deep into something a little obscure today: "Return" from 1985. I'm not gonna lie, the premise hooked me immediately – a woman using hypnotic regression to potentially contact her dead grandfather via some random dude she read about in a magazine. Sounds wild, right? I'm obsessed with films that dabble in the uncanny, and this one definitely flirts with the edge of believability. So, here's my theory: I think the film is secretly a commentary on grief and the lengths people will go to to fill a void. The main character, played by... (shoot, can't remember her name!)… she's clearly grasping at straws. The "regressed" guy, he's either a victim, a con artist, or maybe even both simultaneously? That scene where he starts speaking in that archaic dialect... it's either incredibly convincing acting, or incredibly silly. I'm still teetering on the fence, honestly. But the ending... that’s where I really started to question everything. Were those "memories" real transmissions from beyond, or just echoes of the woman's own subconscious desires and anxieties? Does it even MATTER? I was thinking maybe the truth is less important than the feeling of connection she gets from the whole experience. Maybe that's the real return, not some literal resurrection of her grandpa. Has anyone else seen this? Am I totally off-base? I'd love to hear other interpretations. I feel like I'm missing something crucial in the subtext here, and y'all have amazing insights. Let's discuss! Maybe I'm just overthinking, but that's what makes a movie great, right?
