Witness: Farm Fresh Thrills and Harrison Ford Being Hot (Again)

Okay, so last night I stumbled across "Witness" (1985) and I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised. I knew like, NOTHING about it going in except Harrison Ford was the star and it was set with the Amish. Which, tbh, I assumed would be boring. I was wrong! Ford plays this cop, John Book (great name btw, very pulp fiction-y) who's protecting this little Amish kid who is the SOLE witness to a MURDER in a train station bathroom. Like, dark stuff for an 80s flick, right? Anyway, the whole thing spirals and Book ends up going INTO the Amish community to kinda hide out and protect the kid and his mom, Rachel (played by Kelly McGillis, looking radiant and... yeah). The culture clash is super interesting to watch, especially seeing Ford try to adapt. There's one scene where he's helping raise a barn and he's just sweating bullets and it's kinda funny, but also endearing. Plus, you've got all this simmering sexual tension between Book and Rachel, which, hello, 80s Harrison Ford. Enough said. The real kicker is when the bad guys, who are dirty as hell, find them. The climax is pretty intense and the way the Amish community ultimately deals with the threat is like, the opposite of what you'd expect. It's this quiet, powerful resistance that surprised me. Okay, maybe the ending’s tad saccharine (him leaving her, sniffle sniffle) but I got a major kick out of the whole thing. Honestly? I went in expecting a snooze-fest and got a pretty damn good thriller with some surprisingly deep themes about violence, faith, and finding peace. Ford is just... Ford at his best. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the mood for something a little different and want to see Harrison Ford wield a hammer AND a gun. What's NOT to love?
