Ran: King Lear... BUT WITH SAMURAI?! 🤯
Okay, so I finally got around to watching 'Ran' and HOLY CRAP. I knew it was supposed to be good, but damn, Kurosawa really went all out. I didn't even realize it was based on King Lear until like halfway through, which is kinda embarrassing, lol. But the way he translated that story to feudal Japan? Genius! The battles were insane, especially that one where Lord Hidetora's castle is under siege. The sheer scale of it all, the vibrant colors against the chaos... mind blown. Seriously, the costumes alone deserve an Oscar, even if it was, like, 30 years too late. Speaking of Hidetora, Tatsuya Nakadai's performance was heartbreaking. That scene where he realizes how badly he messed up with his sons? Gut-wrenching. Taro was a total d-bag from the start, but Jiro and Saburo were more complex. Saburo's loyalty felt so genuine, even though he went against his dad's wishes. I honestly felt sorrier for Hidetora than I did for Lear in the play (sorry Shakespeare!). I also liked how Lady Kaede was like, pure evil but in a super compelling way. Really added to the Shakespearean tragedy vibe, ya know? I will admit, it's a long movie, and there are a couple parts where I kinda zoned out (oops!). But the payoff is totally worth it. The ending is bleak AF, but it really makes you think about power, pride, and the consequences of bad decisions. Maybe I'm just a sucker for samurai epics, but 'Ran' is definitely one of my new faves. Has anyone else seen it? What did you guys think? Was it just me, or did the pacing feel a little slow at times, or am I just too ADHD for Kurosawa's slow burn brilliance haha? Let me know!
